Huddersfield Giants v Leeds Rhinos Preview
The Huddersfield Giants welcome the Leeds Rhinos for a West Yorkshire derby that is always full of excitement and full of action.
These 2 clubs have given us some great matches and great memories down the years and whilst they probably won’t be battling it out over the League Leaders Shield again for some time, we are sure we will get plenty of talking points and must see action in this one.
Whilst these 2 near neighbours may have a rivalry as been 2 Yorkshire teams, there isn’t the same level of rivalry as the Giants have the Braford and Halifax or the Rhinos with Braford, Wakefield and Castleford but that is not to say that bragging rights and local pride don’t come into during the 80 minutes of action.
Both teams have players who have played for the opposition which always gives them a boost and an extra incentive to perform.
The match is always one of the biggest attendances of the season for the Giants, which gives it a big game feel and the players rarely let us down in that regard.

Stadium
The John Smith’s Stadium is home to the Huddersfield Giants and plays host to this game.
The stadium can be simply too large for the Giants on a regular match day and that can often lead to a flat atmosphere but when there is a big crowd in attendance the ground is a great place to watch and play a game of Rugby League.
Thankfully for both sets of players and for us fans, when Leeds are in town there is a big following in attendance for both teams and that creates a great atmosphere and one that helps make the players give their very best.

History
The sport of Rugby League was of course established in the town of Huddersfield and with the Rhinos also been one of the oldest and most successful clubs in the sport coupled with the fact that they are both based in West Yorkshire, it will be little surprise to most fans that the 2 have played in a number of major matches down the years.
Going all of the way back to the 1914-15 season, the 2 sides met in the First Division final to decide on the captions and on that occasion it was Huddersfield who dominated and ran out 35 points to 2 winners to pick up the title.
In the 1919-20 season, the 2 sides met in the final of the Yorkshire Cup in aa match held at Thrum Hall in Halifax when it was Huddersfield who ran out comfortable winners by 24 points to 5.
In the 1920’s, the 2 local rivals where not just amongst the best teams in Yorkshire but they were amongst the best nationally which led to them meeting in back to back finals in the 1928-29 and 1929-30 seasons.
Those periods of success also saw them meet in the final of the Yorkshire Cup in the 1930-31 season when Leeds gained some sort of revenge by winning 10 points to 2 at Thrum Hall.
The Yorkshire Cup continued to be a pace for both sides to excel and they once more met in the final in the 1938-39 season where Leeds ran out the winners by 14-8 at Headingley Stadium.
It was Huddersfield who ran out the winners on both occasions when they incredibly kept Leeds scoreless in both matches.
