Championship Rugby League
The Championship is a unique competition in the British Rugby League pyramid as it is a mixture of full time teams looking for to push for a place in the Super League, semi-pro teams looking at making the Top 4 and gain the funds needed to progress as a club and then there are those teams simply looking at survival.
That make up also gives us a mixture of experience Super League standard players and former internationals coming up against young players just starting out in the game and players who have played their entire Rugby careers in the lower leagues whilst also forging careers for themselves away from the game.
That unique make up makes for many exciting matches and unpredictable results but for every shock result you can get a complete blow out.
For us fans and those that likes to bet on the action, having knowledge of the Championship can make for a profitable betting experience. Of course, those shock results will always eat into your funds but knowing if a team have any injuries, suspensions or are simply resting players can really make all of the difference at this level.
Knowing which players are in form and which are out of form can also prove the difference at this level and in the main the bookies don’t have the same level of focus as they do on the, for example, Super League. Whilst that can lead to only a limited amount of markets available for betting on, it can lead to odds that are simply too good to miss.
Championship Teams
RFL Championship
The RFL Championship has been in existence ever since the 2003 season but even in that short amount of time it has been through a number of changes, not just in name but structure, the 2nd tier rugby league can trace it’s roots back a lot further with the Rugby Football League Championship Second Division first been formed in 1902.
That competition always underwent a lot of changes, so the new Championship has certainly take over and kept the spirit of that history and prestige alive.
The 2002, it was announced that a new structure underneath Super League was to be created for the 2003 season, with the 2nd division split into 2 to create the then National League One and National League Two, know known as the Championship and League 1.
In 2009, the Super League was expanded and this brought about changes to the competition below them and it was for this season when the structure we have now came into been, with the 2nd tier taking on the name of the Championship and the 3rd tier becoming Championship 1, before quickly changing to League 1.
Between 2015 and 2018, the top Championship teams got the chance to mix it with the bottom Super League teams for the Qualifiers and this showed the strength and quality of the competition as a number of teams from the 2nd tier went on to defeat those from the top tier.
Nowadays the Championship is a great mix of historic clubs from the heartlands, new up and coming British teams trying to make a name for themselves and then expansion teams from across Europe and North America looking to make there way through the leagues and into the topflight.
Over the last decade or so, the competition has been home to teams from Canada, Wales, France, and England.
One of the highlights of the season for many supporters in the Summer Bash, a 2 day event that features all of the teams playing in the same stadium. This is a great chance for supporters of all the clubs to enjoy the banter and excitement of watching rugby league live at what is a festival of rugby.
This event usually take space at the popular seaside holiday resort of Blackpool and is a great showcase for the division with the action shown live on television.
With promotion to and relegation from the Super League, there are now a number of big name clubs that ply their trade in the 2nd tier and that has helped to bring more focus on the competition but sadly it is still often the case that it goes over-looked by the media and frustratingly from our point of view as a betting portal, by online bookmakers.
That can make it difficult to bet on the RFL Championship but if and when we find a bookie that does focus on the competition, we will bring them to you but for know we recommend using one of these great bookies that do have a strong focus on other aspects of the wonderful sport we are all so passionate about.
