The North Queensland Cowboys are based in the Queensland town of Townsville and although they are in the shadow of one of the Brisbane Broncos, one of the giants of world Rugby, the North Queensland Cowboys still manage to attract some of the world greatest players and regularly compete in the end of season play offs.
Since been formed in 1992, the club is known for been characterised by its Northern remote location and by its working class roots. This helps many English based fans; mostly from England’s great Northern working class cities and towns align themselves with the team.
On the field the North Queensland Cowboys are known for being a hard working team but still have featured superstars in their ranks including Johnathan Thurston and Jason Taumalolo.

Rivals
The Cowboys main rivalry is with their ‘nearest’ opponent the Brisbane Broncos, although it is roughly a 1300km journey by road, with the matches between the 2 clubs given the name of the Queensland Derby.
Whilst there is lots of state pride on the line whenever the 2 sides meet, the 2 sides have also given all fans some of the greatest ever matches including the incredible 2015 NRL Grand Final when the Cowboys ran out 16-16 winners after extra time in a match that has lived long in the memory off all fans that watched it.
Colours / Playing Kit
The clubs prominent colours are navy and grey whilst yellow and white also feature on both their home and away kits to make them instantly recognisable whenever the team take to the field.
History
The Cowboys were established in 1995 when they were admitted into the 1995 ARL competition, although the club soon turned there backs on the league and joined the Super League competition during the Super League wars but thankfully they were admitted into the new combined competition.
The thoughts of adding a second Queensland based side into the ARL came around after the huge success of the Brisbane Broncos who had joined the NSWRL in 1988.
Things did started slowly for the new club however after struggling for the first 2 season, including picking up a wooden spoon for finishing last in the competition during the inaugural 1995 campaign, and that also continued in the Super League competition, where they also finished in last place during their first campaign in the 1997 season.
After the end of the wars, the team thankfully started to show some form in the first edition of the NRL and that turned into something for the club to build on as results and performances continued to improve into the mid-2000’s.
By 2004, the cub had finally reached their first end of season finals and after losing in the semi-finals that year to the Roosters, the cub went one better in 2005 and reach their first ever Grand Final, although they did lose that match to the Tigers.
The next couple of years were also solid ones for the Townsville based side before a sudden drop in form between 2008-10 that left the club struggling.
It took until 2012 for the club to return to the finals but that turned out to be the foundation block of the cubs first Premiership title.
In 2014, they won the Auckland Nines but it was a year injury hit season for the Cowboy’s but they still reached the finals and they managed to unearth some solid youngsters to bolster their squad going forward.
In 2015 they had their best ever league campaign before going even further in 2015 and not only reaching the Grand Final but they defeated the Broncos by a single point in one of the great matches in Grand Final history.
In 2016, the cub headed over to the UK and took of the Leeds Rhinos in a game that they dominated from start to finish to win their first ever World Club Challenge.
Since those highest of high days, the cub have struggled with much of that team aging or retiring and they have been ion almost a constant flux as they look to rebuild but they did pick up the 2020 NRL Nines title.
