Huddersfield Giants v Castleford Tigers Preview
The Huddersfield Giants welcome near neighbours, the Castleford Tigers for a West Yorkshire derby in a match up that is often a great watch.
Sport is often at it’s best when 2 evenly matched players or teams go up against each other and when those opponents have different styles, it can take things to the next level and that is just what we have with this game.
Squad wise, the 2 teams are relatively evenly matched as both feature a mix of internationals, great youngster’s and well established stars of the NRL and the Super League but both don’t have the squad depth to rival those of the top teams.
On their day both sides can and do put in the type of performance that many predict them to be challenging for trophies but both can also have off days where they are well below par.
The big difference in the 2 clubs is the way that they approach the game. The Cas Tigers are well drilled and rely on a structured playbook whilst the Giants rely more on their players see what is and isn’t on at any given time.

Stadium
The John Smiths Stadium is host of this game and home to the Giants and whilst it can be one of the best stadiums in the sport when full and especially for internationals it can be somewhat of an eerie place for Huddersfield matches due to the size of it.
Thankfully for this game the Giants fans tend to come out in numbers when the Tigers are in town and the away side tend to have a big following this one so their should be a decent atmosphere to help the players give us a great match.

History
As two of the oldest clubs in world Rugby League and with only a few miles along the M62 between these 2 West Yorkshire rivals, it is not too surprising that these 2 have met each other in many important matches on the both the local stage, including in the Yorkshire Cup and on the National Stage, in both league and cup matches but arguably the biggest matchup between the 2 sides came all of the way back in the 1934-35 season.
Both clubs enjoyed successful season and met in the final of that seasons Challenge Cup, where a little under 40,000 fans headed down to London and to the iconic old Wembley Stadium for what turned out to be a fantastic and close game.
In the end it was the Castleford Tigers who ran out the winners with a 11-8 victory, which was perhaps a small upset at the time as the Giants had already won the trophy on 4 occasion up to that date, including just 2 season before, but it was the first ever win for the nowadays Tigers but who were then simply known as Castleford RLFC.
In the 1950-51 season, the 2 sides met in the final of the Yorkshire Cup for a match played at Headingley Stadium in Leeds where Huddersfield ran out comfortable winners by 16 points to 3.
