Wigan Warriors v Huddersfield Giants Preview
The Wigan Warriors take on the Huddersfield Giants in a game between 2 teams who have a similar approach to the game and who have similarly built squads.
Both clubs like to mix lots of home grown youngsters with experienced stars and both teams are built around speedy backs and mobile forwards but whilst the Warriors have turned that formula into constant success, the Giants have been a club that have enjoyed periods of success but periods of struggle as well.
Whilst that may not have much impact on this game in itself, it does mean that we could be set for a great match up and one that will be competitive throughout.

History
Both Wigan and Huddersfield are amongst the foundation clubs in the sport so it will come as little surprise that they have a long history of big matches including a number of games between the 2 sides battling it out over titles and trophies.
That history goes all of the way back to the 1911-12 season when the 2 sides met in the Rugby Football League Championship final to decide on the champions of England.
In that final it was Huddersfield who came away with a 13 points to 5 win.
The 2 teams met in the very next final just 12 months later in a match that Hudds dominated from start to finish to pick up another title by 29 points to 2.
The next time the 2 battled it out over the Championship came in the first post war campaign in 1945-46 where it was Wigan who came out on top and won the title whist it was Huddersfield who finished as runners up.
It didn’t take long for Huddersfield to try and gain revenge when the 2 met in the 1949-50 Championship decider but it was Wigan who came out on top once again with a relatively straight forward 20 points to 2 win.
It is not just in the league that the 2 have a long history, as they have been battling for much of their existence over silverware in cup competitions as well including in the 1919-20 Challenge Cup final when it was Huddersfield who defeated Wigan by 21 points to 10.
