History
As you would expect from 2 clubs the size of these North West rivals, there have been many incredible matches down the years featuring the sides but there have been a number that have stood out due to the importance of them.
In the summer-era, the 2 sides have battled it out over silverware in both the league and cup including the 2013 Super League Grand Final when it was Wigan who came out on top at Old Trafford by 30 points to 16 in front of over 70,000 fans.
It didn’t take long for the 2 sites to meet once again at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ when they faced off in the 2016 Grand Final where Wigan once again prevailed with a 12 points to 6 win, again in front of over 70,000 fans.
It was a similar tale in the 2018 Grand Final when Wigan this time defeated the Wolves by 12 points to 4 in front of nearly 65,000 fans.
It has not just been in the summer-era that the 2 side shave battled it out over national titles as they have been doing just that ever since the 1925-26 season.
In that season, it was for the Rugby Football League Championship Division One title that the 2 faced off over and it was Wigan who grabbed the trophy with a 22 points to 10 win.
The two teams also have a long history of big matches in cup competitions as well including the 1989-90 Challenge Cup final when Warrignton faced off against Wigan in the middle of their record breaking run of wins.
It will come as no surprise therefor that it was the Cherry and Whites that came away with the win and brought the trophy back to the North West from London after a 36 points to 14 win at the iconic Wembley Stadium.
Just as the two have long been successful at the national level, they have also enjoyed lots of success at the more local level including a number of matches against each other.
One such occasion came in the 1948-49 Lancashire Cup final when Wigan defeated Warrington by 14 points to 8 at Station Road in Swinton.
It didn’t take long for the 2 too meet at the same stage of the same competition when they met in the 1950-51 final where it was Wigan who again came away with the trophy by 28 points to 5.
The next final of the Lancashire Cup to see the 2 sides meet came in the 1980-81 season when Warrington picked up a win at Knowsley Road in St Helens.
Wigan didn’t have to wait long to overturn that defeat as they met in the 1985-86 final, again at Knowsley Road, where Wigan won 38-4.
It took just 2 years for the sides to meet again the final, at the same location and it was the same outcome as well with Wigan winning by 28 points to 16.
The near neighbours also enjoyed a few battles in the final of the former League Cup as well, starting in the 1986-87 final when Wigan ran out 18-4 winner sat Burnden Park in Bolton.
It took until the 1994-95 season for the sides to meet in the final again where it was Wigan once more that picked up the silverware in a dominant 40-10 victory at the then McAlpine Stadium in Huddersfield.
The 2 met in the next final, which would also be the last League Cup final, where the newly renamed Wigan Warriors defeated Warrignton once again by 25 points to 16 in Huddersfield once again.
