History
Over the past few decades, their have been 2 clubs that have enjoyed the most dominant spells and they are the Wigan Warriors and the Leeds Rhinos.
Although both have enjoyed success throughout the summer era and in the ears building to that, the Warriors were the dominant team of the 1990’s (when they were arguably the most dominant any team has ever been), whilst the Rhinos were the most dominant side during the early 2000’s.
It will be no surprise therefore that some of the biggest and best matches to take place during those eras were when the 2 sides came up head to head in finals to decide where titles and trophies would go.
In the pre-summer era, the 2 sides battled for the Rugby Football League Championship First Division title to determine the national champions.
On all 3 of those occasions (1989-90, 1994-95 and 1995-96), it was Wigan who came out on top as the winners as part of their dominant 7 straight title victories pre-Super League.
During the 1990’s the 2 sides also met in back to back Challenge Cup finals at Wembley in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons, where it was also the Warriors to win those finals by 26-16 and 30-10 respectively.
During Leeds’ dominant years in the Super League, the 2 sides met in one Super League Grand Final where it was Leeds who ran out the winners by 22 points to 20 in the Old Trafford showpiece.
During the same period, the 2 sides also met at Wembley Stadium in the Challenge Cup final where it was Wigan that came out on top by 28 points to 18.
The 2 sides also met in the final of the League Cup (then known as the John Player Trophy) in the 1982-83 season when Wigan defeated Leeds by 15 points to 4 at Elland Road.
