Huddersfield Giants v Wigan Warriors Preview
The Huddersfield Giants take on the Wigan Warriors in a West Yorkshire v Greater Manchester (Lancashire) match up that will have a big say on the season for both teams.
Down the years, these 2 have given us some great battle and must watch matches and with the quality out their on the field heading into this one, we could be set for much of the same.
There are a lot of similarities between the 2 clubs, with both having a number of youngsters brought through there systems and into the first team and both have a number of experienced internationals but whilst the Warriors have managed to turn that formula into a title winning one and a trophy laden period, the Giants have become somewhat of a yo-yo teams where they are either battling it out at the top or battling it out at the bottom.
Thankfully for fans of the hosts, the Giants seem to be on their way up once more but this one will be a great test for them to see just where they are at the moment.

Stadium
The John Smith’s Stadium is host for this one and whilst the large stadium can give a great atmosphere when full and has quickly become one of the sports premier stages for internationals, sometimes for a regular Huddersfield game it can prove to be 2 big.
That leads to a lack of atmosphere but when a big club, such as the Wigan Warriors, are in town, the ground comes to life and the fans give the sort of atmosphere that allows the players to give their best.
With the quality on both sides of the field that should give us an entertaining 80 minutes of rugby league action.

History
If you are a newer fan to the sport of Rugby League, you will know that Wigan were the domain side in the build up to the Super League era and they have been one of the top sides since the change to the summer game but what you may not know is that Huddersfield is the birthplace of the sport and the Giants are one of the oldest clubs who have enjoyed lots of success themselves.
It is perhaps no surprise then that there have been some huge match ups between the 2 sides for much of the history of the sport with one of the earliest coming in the 1911-12 RFL Championship First Division final.
In a match to determine the champions of England, it was Huddersfield who ran out 13-5 winners to pick up the title.
The 2 sides met in the final the very next season when Huddersfield also won the match, this time by 29 points to 2.
It took until the mid-1940’s for the 2 sides to meet once again in what was the first national league title to be held after the break for World War 2. It was Wigan who came out on top in that one.
It didn’t take too long for the next battle between the sides for the title as they met in the 1949-50 Championship final when Wigan ended up thrashing Huddersfield by 20 points to 2.
The 2 have also enjoyed big matches in the cup including in the 1919-20 season when they faced off in the Challenge Cup final.
On that occasion it was Huddersfield who ran out the winners by 21 points to 10 to pick up the cup and grab the headlines.
