Huddersfield Giants v Wakefield Trinity Preview
The Huddersfield Giants welcome Wakefield Trinity for a West Yorkshire derby that is also a fascinating watch.
These 2 near neighbours have a number of players who have played for both clubs and that always adds an extra element to matches between the 2 sides and whilst it isn’t the fiercest of rivalries, it is always a game that is important for both sets of fans.
Both of these clubs have lots of quality throughout their squads but both struggle with a lack of depth, with injuries often impacting there season.
Wakey have one of the smallest budgets in the competition making survival there only goal whilst the Giants are a club who target the play-offs.
In a matchup between 2 relatively evenly matched squads, this is one of those games that can really make or break a season and it is a game both will likely target for a win.

Stadium
The Huddersfield Giants John Smiths Stadium plays host to this one and whilst the size and openness of the stadium can often lead to a poor atmosphere, it is often the case that both sets of fans turn up in big numbers for this local derby.
That in turn helps the atmosphere and that in turn often helps the players to perform to their best and that should give 80 minutes of entertaining rugby.

History
There are only a few miles between theses 2 West Yorkshire rivals and that has seen lots of players move between the 2 sides which has led to lots of interest in many matches for both sets of fans but there have been a number of matches that have grab headlines around the country.
As two of the most historic Rugby clubs in the sports heartland, these 2 sides have been facing off against each other in a number of competitions for well over 100 years, so it is no surprise that some of those 100’s of matches have stood out over and above the others.
One such occasion came in the final of the 1961-62 Challenge Cup when the 2 sides met at Wembley Stadium when it was Trinity who ran out the winners by 12 points to 6.
The 2 sides domination over all others in that season was highlighted by the fact that they also met in the Rugby Football League First Division Championship Final, the precursor to the Super League Grand Final, in a match to determine champions of England.
On that occasion, it was Huddersfield who ran out the winners, by 14 points to 5, and pick up the championship title.
On the more local level, the 2 sides met in major final as early as the 1910-11 season when Wakefield defeated Huddersfield by 8 points to 2 in the final of the Yorkshire Cup in a match held at Headingley Stadium in Leeds.
They also met in the final of the same competition in the 1926-27 final when Huddersfield also picked up the cup in a 10-3 win once again at Huddersfield.
It took until the 1960-61 season for Trinity to gain there revenge in the Yorkshire Cup when they defeated Huddersfield by 16 points to 10, once again in Leeds at Headingley Stadium.
