Castleford Tigers v Wakefield Trinity Preview
The Castleford Tigers take on their near neighbours, Wakefield Trinity, in a Calder / Wakefield MDC derby in what is always a big match for both sides and always an exciting game for neutrals.
As a town in the city of Wakefield, Castleford and the Cas Tigers fans just love to get one over Trinity whilst the rivalry is certainly returned by the fans of Wakefield.
That rivalry adds importance to the game no matter what stage of the season it is played in or how much is on the line for both teams but most importantly that rivalry always makes sure that there is a packed house in attendance and that there is a great atmosphere awaiting the players.
Just who will have bragging rights in the Wakefield region of West Yorkshire? Here are our thoughts and review of the action.

Stadium
No matter if you know it as Wheldon Road, The Jungle or the Mend-a-Hose Jungle, the Tigers home stadium is one of the most unique in the whole of the Super League.
The pitch is incredibly narrow and is short which always gives an advantage to the hosts who are used to playing on it but the biggest home advantage comes from the stands.
Just as the playing surface is tight, the stands are tight up against the pitch and whilst the ground is well past it’s best, whenever Cas plays host to Wakey there is a big crowd in attendance and that means that 1000’s of fans will be right next to the players to support there team and to make life difficult for the opposition players from the other side of the district.

Rivalry
There are some rivalry built upon teams battling it out over titles and trophies and there are some that are built on the location of both sides and this is certainly one that is the former.
Both are based in the Wakefield Metropolitan District and ever match between the 2 sides therefore is a chance to have local bragging rights.
This rivalry nearly came to a head at the onset of the Super League when a potential merger between the 3 Wakefield teams of Wakefield Trinity, Castleford Tigers and Featherstone Rovers was mooted but thankfully that didn’t happen and the 3 sides have continued to enthral their fans.
History
Although every match between these 2 rivals is always a highlight of the season for both sets of fans, there are some matches that stand out over all others and one such game came in the 2005 Super League season.
Both teams struggled throughout the year and in the end, it simply came down to the last game of the season as to who would be relegated or who would stay up.
In a quirk of the fixture list, the 2 sides met each other at Belle Vue in a game that was to become known as ‘The Battle of Belle Vue’.
The match was played out in front of a sold out crowd with some fans taking to the roofs of surrounding building to watch the action and after a great game, it was the hosts who ran out the winners and who survived in the top flight.
That match in many ways became the precursor and the inspiration for the Million Pound Game, which is now used as a promotion or relegation play-off.
As two of the stalwarts of the game in Yorkshire, it is perhaps surprising that the 2 sides haven’t met on too many occasions in big finals but one time they did was in the 1990-91 season when the 2 local rivals met in the final of the Yorkshire Cup.
In a match played at Elland Road in Leeds, it was Cas who ran out the winner s by 11-8 in a closely contested match in front of a passionate crowd
