Wigan Warriors v Leigh Centurions Preview
The Wigan Warriors welcome their borough rivals, the Leigh Centurions for a derby game that is always a great occasion.
There have been far to few of theses derby matches over the past decade or so but that just makes each one we do get even more special and we are sure that this one will live up to the expectation.
Whilst the 2 sides are located close to each geographically, on the field things are different with the Warriors going into every season expecting success and fielding a host of international stars whilst the expectation on the Leigh players is much less but that in many ways will make them a tougher opponent for the hosts as they will be able to head to their neighbours with freedom.

Stadium
The DW Stadium is the host venue for this derby game and whilst it is a fantastic stadium when full, it can be a bit soulless for smaller games.
Thankfully, that will not be the case for this one as the derby will see a large and loud crowd in attendance and that should be the perfect setting for the players to step up and to give us a great rugby league match.

History
Although each and every match between these 2 next door neighbours is hugely important to both sets of fans due to the local bragging rights on the line, there matches have failed to make much of an impact at the national level in terms of big matches and final.
At the county level, the 2 have been more involved over silverware, especially in the Lancashire Cup, where the 2 sides made history in the 1905-06 season when they played in the first ever Lancashire Cup final.
The 2 sides also made history, perhaps in an unwanted way, when they played out the first and only 0-0 final in that competition, in a match played at Wheater’s Field in Broughton.
The same ground hosted the replay where Leigh once again failed to score as Wigan ran out 8-0 victors to pick up the inaugural Lancashire Cup.
It didn’t take too long for the rivals to meet in the final of the same competition once again as they faced off in the final of the 1909-10 Lancashire Cup where Wigan ran out 22-5 winners, once again in a match played in the Salford suburb of Broughton.
The next final between the 2 didn’t take place until the 1922-23 season when it was Wigan who once again prevailed. This time they won by 20 points to 2 in a match played at the Willows in Salford.
It took until the 1949-50 season for the 2 sides to meet once again in the county final when once more it was Wigan who came out on top by a score of 20 points to 7 in a match played at Wilderspool Stadium in Warrington.
Leigh got a chance to gain revenge just a couple of seasons later at Station Road in Swinton but once again it was Wigan who came out on top by 14 points to 6.
