Wigan Warriors v Leeds Rhinos Preview
In our opinion every single game of Rugby League has the potential to be an incredible 80 minutes of entertainment there are some matches that stand out over the rest and elevates them into must see occasions.
One such match is the Wigan Warriors vs the Leeds Rhinos.
With 2 of the biggest supporters bases and 2 of the most successful clubs of the last half a century it is no surprise that this game stands out but it isn’t all about the history of the clubs, it is very much about the present day.
Both sides feature lots of quality across the park, from up and coming youngsters with a bright future ahead of them to seasoned internationals, both teams have great options across the park but perhaps the best aspect of any match up between Wigan and Leeds is the fact that you can never quite predict what will happen and the game will likely be in the balanced throughout and that, when mixed with the quality on both sides and the passion in the stands, is when the sport of Rugby League is at its very best.

History
These 2 sides have been amongst the most dominant in the summer-era, so it is quite apt that the 2 faced off in the first ever Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford when it was the Warriors that came with the title with a 10-4 victory.
It took until the 2015 season for the 2 sides to meet in the Grand Final once again when they played out one of the closest finals in history when Leeds picked up the title with a 22 points to 20 win.
During the same era, the 2 sides have also met in big cup matches including in the 2011 Challenge Cup final at the iconic Wembley Stadium where it was Wigan that headed back up north from London with the cup after a 28 points to 18 victory.
The 2 clubs do of course have a long history of success and big matches between the 2 sides including in the decade or so leading to the summer-era, when the 2 sides were the top clubs in the country.
In the 1989-90 season, Wigan started there run of 7 straight league titles by pipping Leeds to the title, something that they also did in the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons.
The clubs also battled it out over the cup in that era including in the 1993-94 final when it was Wigan who ran out the winners by 30 points to 10.
The 2 sides also met in the Wembley showpiece final the next season when it was Wigan who once again prevailed with a 30 points to 10 win.
There history in the League Cup goes back even further as they met in the 1982-83 final of the then John Player Trophy when Wigan won by 15 points to 4 in a match played at Elland Road in Leeds.
