Toronto Wolfpack v Castleford Tigers Preview

The Toronto Wolfpack take on the Castleford Tigers in the Canadians first ever Super League match up but unfortunately due to travel and weather implications, the match is set to take place on neutral territory at Headingley Stadium.

With the Cas Tigers been based just down the road, they will have a healthy backing off their own but all eyes will be on the Wolfpack and on their star signing Sonny Bill Williams and SBW makes his first appearance in the Super League.

The former New Zealand dual international was the headline signing of the off season and will be the one to watch this season but there are a lot more question marks over the Wolfpack as they have decided to run with mostly the same squad that got them promoted.

The majority of their side does have either Super League or NRL experience but after playing a year or 2 in the Championship, they will have to face a step up in intensity and unfortunately for fans of the Wolfpack, it is quite the step up as they face one of the top teams of the topflight.

The Tigers, by their own high standards under Daryl Powell, struggled last season and they will be looking to make a statement in this one and to prove a few doubters wrong but it has been another off season when they have lost there star player.

It will be fascinating to see how they cope without Luke Gale but they have made some strong signing in the transfer market and look a much better balanced squad heading into 2020.

Form

Not only is this the first game of the season but this is the first ever match for the Wolfpack in the top flight so there is no form to go by.

Team News

The headline news is that star signing Sonny Bill Williams is set to make his Super League debut after been named along other new signings Brad Singleton and James Cunningham by Toronto.

The Tiger’s are also set for some debutants with Danny Richardson, George Griffin, Tyla Hepi and Derrell Olpherts named but their is no place in the squad for Sosaia Feki.

Stadium

The match, for a number of reason take place at Headingley Stadium in Leeds so expect the Tigers to have the majority of the crowd backing them with many Tigers fans living in and around Leeds.

Prediction

This is a tough one to predict as nobody really knows what to expect from the Wolfpack. Yes they have a number of players with NRL and Super League experience but the bulk of the squad have been away from top flight competition for some time now.

You also have there SBW factor and whilst he has already started to show his worth off of the field, he too hasn’t played top flight rugby league for some time.

Unfortunately for Wolfpack fans, this could be a baptism of fire as they face one of the league top sides in round one and whilst we expect Toronto to be in with a chance for much of the game, that extra quality in the Tigers side should shine through in the last 20 minutes.
