St Helens v Leeds Rhinos Preview
St Helens welcome the Leeds Rhinos for what is always one of the standout matches of the season and what is a match that has consistently given us all great action and must see moments no matter if you are a supporter of either side or if you are a neutral.
As two of the most successful sides during the Super League era, matches between these 2 have gone a long way to deciding where titles and trophies will end up come the end of the season and whilst that cannot be the case in every game, there is that extra air of expectation from fans in attendance and from fans of the game in general when these 2 meet.
That buzz around the game often effects things out on the field as even if one of the teams is struggling for form or with injuries, when these 2 meet, both sides step up and go toe to toe over 80 minutes and give all of us rugby fans great action.
Both sides are packed with international stars, some of the best youngsters in the game and players who have come through the ranks at their club and know just how important the game is so whilst it is not a derby game, it does have that playing bragging rights feel about it and makes it a must win for both teams no matter what the situation is for both clubs.

History
For much of the Super League era, these 2 giants of the game have been the dominant forces and that has seen them play a number of major matches and big finals.
In 2007, the 2 teams met in the showpiece final at Old Trafford in front of nearly 72,000 fans when it was Leeds who ran out the victors.
Nobody new at that game that it was just the start of a trilogy as the new 2 Super League Grand Finals also features Saints facing off against Leeds and on each occasion it was Leeds who came away the victors.
The 2 also met in the 2011 Super League Grand Final when Leeds once again got the better of Saints in a 32-16 win.
The history of these 2 giants at the top of the game does go back much further than that however including in the 1971-72 Challenge Cup final when the 2 played out 1 of the closest matches at Wembley Stadium in London when Saints just managed to grab the cup in a 16-13 victory.
It didn’t take long for the 2 to meet in the final once again and for Leeds to gain revenge when they headed back up the M1 with the Challenge Cup trophy after narrowly beating Saints by 14 points to 12 in another instant classic matchup between the 2 sides.
In the 1987 season, the 2 met in the League Cup final, then known as the John Player Special Trophy, when they once again battled it out for the full 80 minute in an incredibly tight affair when Saints held on to a 15-14 win at Central Park Stadium in Wigan.
Another tight final took place during the 1970-71 season when Leeds met Saints in the final of the BBC2 Floodlit Trophy at Headingley Stadium where Leeds came away with a 9-5 win and the trophy.
