New Craven Park, whilst going by a number of names down the year has now been the long term home of Hull KR since the late 1980’s but in many ways the new part of the grounds name is still relevant as it is a stadium that has continued to evolve down the years.

With 3 well developed sides and the bulk of the Hull KR fanbase down one side of the stadium, the ground is known for its great atmosphere but when it comes to derby day that gets ramped up, with fans singing from well before the game to well after the final whistle.

This is one game of the season when a sell-out is always on the cards and more often than not the unused 4th stand is open for extra fans to be allowed in.

History

As you would likely expect from the 2 clubs and the huge rivalry that they have, whenever they face off head to head it is a huge occasion and a must watch event for not just fans of both sides but for fans of the sport in general.

It will also come as no surprise that with the long history and decades of success that both sides have enjoyed, there have been a number of standout matches that have had more on the line than simply local bragging rights.

One of the most famous occasions came in the 1979-80 season when the 2 met at Wembley Stadium in the final of the Challenge Cup.

On a day when local and national media filmed hoards of fans all leaving Hull, including the iconic banner stating ‘Last One Out Turn The Lights Off’ that was placed over the main dual carriageway form the city to the motorway, it was a final that lived long in the memory.

The old Wembley was packed to the rafters and the match was played in front of an incredible atmosphere that seem to spur the players on to give their all but in the end it was the Red and White side of Hull that defeated the Black and Hite side by 10 points to 5.

That wasn’t the first major final however between the local rivals as they enjoyed battling it out over silverware as even way back in the 1920-21 season when the 2 were amongst the strongest teams in England.

In that year, they featured in the Rugby Football League Championship First Division final, the earlier version of the Super League Grand Final, to decide upon the champions of England and on that occasion it was Hull FC who claimed the trophy and the glory in a narrow 16-14 win.

The 2 also battled it out of the title of the 1982-83 season when it was also the Airlie Birds who ran out the winners but in the next season, it was the Robins who ran out the winners with Hull FC as runners up.

It has not just been the national stage where these 2 have battled for silverware as they have also fought over titles and trophies on the more local level including in the 1920-21 Yorkshire Cup final when Rovers battled past their arch rivals by just 2 points to 0.

It took until the 1967-68 season for the two to meet in the final of the same competition, when it was another close affair as Rovers pipped the Airlie Birds by just a single points in an 8-7 win.

The next final was not quite so close as the 2 met to decide the winners of the 1985-86 Yorkshire Cup in a game comfortably won by Hull Kingston Rovers by 29 points to 12.

The 2 sides also battled it out in the of the League Cup n 2 occasions with the first coming in the 1981-82 season.

Then known as the John Player Trophy, it was Hull FC who reigned supreme and pick up the trophy in a 12-4 victory at Headingley Stadium in Leeds.

They met in the 1984-85 season as well in the final of the then known as John Player Special Trophy when the Robins gained revenge with a domain 12-0 win over their city neighbours at a match played at Hull City’s then home ground of Boothferry Park.

The 2 also played out the very last BBC2 Floodlit Trophy final in the 1979-80 season when the Airlie Birds prevailed by 13 points to 3 at the Boulevard.
