Huddersfield Giants v Hull FC Preview
The Huddersfield Giants take on Hull FC in a West Yorkshire vs East Yorkshire derby match up that has the potential to be an exciting one.
On paper these 2 sides are relatively evenly matched but of course matches aren’t played on paper and the inconsistent nature of both clubs makes this a difficult match to predict as whilst if they both play to their strengths and perform close to their best it could be a tight game that is in the balance throughout but if one team doesn’t show up, as has happened far too often over the past few years with these 2, it could be a one sided game.
On the plus side is the fact that there is so much quality on both sides of the field and both teams have star half backs that can produce match winning performances.

Stadium
The John Smiths Stadium plays host to this game and whilst it is one of the biggest and best stadiums in Rugby League when full, it can provide a difficult place to play in smaller matches due to lack of atmosphere.
Thankfully that isn’t often the case when a team such as Hull FC are in town as they bring a big following and a vocal backing.
That should give the players the perfect setting to produce an exciting 80 minutes of action.

History
As you would expect from two of the most historic clubs in the sport and from two teams based in the heartland county of Yorkshire, there have been a number of stand out matches to feature the 2 sides down the years.
One such occasion came in 1997, when just a year after Ken Davy took over the ownership of the club and investing heavily in players such as Garry Schofield (who signed for a 6 figure sum), the newly renamed Giants met Hull in the Divisional Championship final at Old Trafford where they comfortably ran out 18-0 victors.
The Giants made the end of season play-offs for the first time during the Super League era in the 2006 season but in their first play-off game, they lost to Hull FC by 22-16 in Hull.
It has not just been in the modern era that the sides have met in important matches however as these 2 foundation clubs met in the final of the Rugby League Championship all of the way back in the 1919-20 season when it was Hull FC who ran out the winners in a tight 3-2 game.
Both sides have also enjoyed lots of success in cup competitions so it is no surprise that they have also met in big matches in both local and national competitions, including in the final of the 1914-15 Yorkshire Cup, when Huddersfield thrashed Hull by 31 points to nil in a match played at Headingley Stadium in Leeds.
It didn’t take long for the sides to meet in the final of the same competition as both sides headed once again to Headingley Stadium for the 1923-24 final in a match won by Hull FC by 10 points to 4.
The next Yorkshire Cup final to feature the 2 giants of the country came in the 1938-39 season final when it was Huddersfield turn to pick up the cup with a 18-10 win at Odsal Stadium in Bradford.
