Castleford Tigers v Huddersfield Giants Preview
The Castleford Tigers take on the Huddersfield Giants in this West Yorkshire derby that has all of the ingredients needed for a great game.
Whilst the rivalry between these 2 isn’t all that strong for 2 relatively close teams, there are a number of players that have played for the opposing team and that does add an extra element to the game.
The best aspect of matches between the 2 sides is that with both teams been relatively evenly matched, the games between the sides tend to also be even and that is when any sport is at its very best.
With that said, there have been a few matches down the years and during the Super League era, when one club has dominated the other in these matches and in the end that has gone on to provide a good indicator of a successful season for the dominant team.

Stadium
There can be no denying that the Tigers Wheldon Road ground has its issues and is in desperate need of modernising, there can also be no denying that on its day, it is still amongst the most atmospheric in Rugby and that is more often than not the case when the Giants are in town as with the short distance between the 2 towns, there are lots of away fans in attendance.

History
It will come as little surprise that these 2 West Yorkshire rivals have enjoyed a long and storied history of facing off against each other, with many matches been played in local competitions as well as on the national stage but there are some matches that have stood out over the years as a major part of the history of both sides.
The first major match up between the 2 on the nationals stage came in the 1934-35 season Challenge Cup final where the 2 neighbours met at the old Wembley Stadium.
In a match played in front of around 39,000 it was the Tigers who ran out the victors by 11-8 to pick up the Challenge Cup for the very first time.
Back in those days, the nowadays Giants but then simply Huddersfield RLFC, were one of the most dominant teams in the sport and had already won the cup on 4 occasions, including a win just 2 years prior, which made that win for Cas somewhat of a shock win at the time.
One standout match between the 2 West Yorkshire rivals during the Super League era came in 2012 when Jamie Ellis, a player who played for both of these cubs during his long career, had one of the standout performances of his long career when he scored a record breaking 24 points for Cas as they dominated the Giants.
In that game he also score 10 goals- another record during the Super League era for the Tigers.
Interestingly, Luke Gale matched that overall scoring record, also against the Giants, in March 2017, but that feat was made up of 3 tries and 6 goals.
