Wigan Warriors v Salford Red Devils Preview
The Wigan Warriors take on the Salford Red Devils in a local derby that may not have the same level of rivalry in the stands that other local rivals have but it is a game that gives us an underdog vs. giants match up that should be an intriguing game.
The Warriors are a club who go into each and every season and each and every competition with the expectation to be competing for silverware and they go into every match almost expecting to win.
The Red Devils on the other hand are a club whose main aim is to simply survive in the topflight every season but as they have shown recently, when they get on a roll and when they are full of confidence, they have the ability to take on and defeat anybody.

Stadium
The Wigan Warriors play their home games at the DW Stadium and it is this international standard ground that plays host to this game.
The stadium is a modern venue with good corporate facilities and as it is shared with the towns football team, it is an all seater ground but it is also a stadium full of contrasts.
When full, the stadium gives one of the best atmospheres in the competition but when the ground is half full, it can be amongst the flattest venues in the competition.

History
These 2 North-West rivals have a long and storied history which has included a number of major matches on the national scene as well as at the more local level.
One of the biggest matches in the history of both clubs came in the 1933-34 when they faced off in the Rugby Football League Championship First Division final to battle over the national title when it was Wigan who came out on top by a score of 15 points to 3.
It has been at the county level where most of their big matches have occurred including a trilogy of Lancashire Cup finals in the mid-1930’s.
The 2 sides first faced off in the 1934-35 final at Station Road in Swinton where Salford prevailed by 21 points to 12.
In the next final, Salford once again picked up the cup with a 15 points to 7 win with the match this time played at Wilderspool Stadium in Warrington.
The last game of the 3 back to back matches came in the 1936-37 season where Salford once again won, this time by 15 points to 7 with the action one again taking place in Warrington.
It didn’t take long for Wigan to gain a small amount of revenge for those 3 straight losses however as the 2 sides met again in the final in the 1938-39 final where Wigan finally picked up a win by 10 points to 7 in a match played at Station Road.
The net county final to see the 2 face off didn’t happen until the 1973-74 season when it was Wigan who picked up the silverware by defeating their local rivals 19 points to 9 at Wilderspool Stadium.
The last county final between the 2 sides came in the 1988-89 season when the 2 entertained in a 22 points to 17 win for Wigan at Knowsley Road in St Helens.
The 2 sides also met in the final of the former BBC2 Floodlit Trophy in the 1974-75 season where they played out a rather dull 0-0 match at the Willows in Salford.
That sent the match to a replay at Wilderspool Stadium in Warrington where it was Salford who ran out the winners by 10 points to 5.
