Super League v NRL
In recent times the World Club Challenge has been expanded to include up to the winners of the Challenge Cup and the league Leaders Shield from this side of world and the to 3 sides from the Southern Hemisphere.
This is known as the World Club Series, where the best of Super League takes on the best of NRL. Although the match outside of the World Club Challenge itself have nothing but pride on the line, whenever England takes on Australia at sport it is anything but a friendly no matter how much, or how little, is up for grabs.
Every match from the World Club Series, including the World Club Challenge take place over the same weekend towards the beginning of the Super League season and normally a week or 2 before the start of the NRL to allow for the teams to prepare for the matches.
No matter what the format of the World Club Challenge, from winner v winner or as a series, the goal is the same, it is the Super League v the NRL.
WCC
The World Club Challenge was first inaugurated way back in 1976 although it was not until the 1980s when it became a regular occasion. The 1990’s was a turbulent time for the sport and for the WCC but ever since the year 2000, the event has been held at the start of every season.
The tournament has continued to build since those days and it is now open to teams from Australia, New Zealand, England, Wales, France, and Canada but so far only teams from England and Australia has won the event.
As you would expect from a competition with such history and prestige, there have been a number of notable moments throughout the history of the WCC.
The first World Club Challenge was played between the Eastern Suburbs (now the Sydney Roosters) who defeated St Helens at the ionic Sydney Cricket Ground.
The next year saw the event hosted in the United Kingdom for the first time and the first ever win for a British team as the Wigan Warriors defeated the Manly Sea Eagles in front of nearly 37,000 fans at Central Park.
In 1991, Wigan became the first club to win 2 titles after defeating Penrith at Anfield.
In 1992, Brisbane became the first team to win on away soil, when they defeated Wigan but the very next season, Wigan returned the favour defeating the Broncos in Queensland o become the first team to win on 3 occasions.
The 1997 event was played out between 2 Australian teams due to the Super League Wars but the match was also the first held in a neutral country as Brisbane defeated the Hunter Mariners at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand.
In 2003, the Sydney Roosters defeated Saints at Bolton by 38 points to 0, with Saints becoming the first team to be kept scoreless.
Saints become the 2nd team to be kept scoreless in their 2015 39-0 home loss to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Wigan became the first team to win on 4 occasions when they defeated Cronulla but in 2020, the Sydney Roosters became the first team to win on 5 occasions when they defeated Saints.
Of course as a Rugby League betting Portal, one of the great parts of the World Club Challenge, or the World Club Series for extended seasons, is the fact that there is always a bit of the unknown about it.
Part of the problem in predicting what will happen in the match comes from the fact that it takes place at the start of a new season and features the winners of the Super league and the NRL from the season before.
As one of the first matches of the season for the Super League team and the first game of the season for the NRL, there is little to no form to take into account.
Another issue to keep in mind is the fact that both teams will have new players that they are bedding in and they will also likely have lost players from the season before.
That means there is often some good value to be found when betting on the WCC and perhaps best of all it is a match that the top bookmakers offer a good range of markets to bet on.
If you are looking to place a bet on this years Rugby League World Club Challenge, why not choose one of these fantastic bookmakers.
Remember that as a match that only takes place on one night a year, the odds and available betting markets for the WCC don’t always show up on bookmakers websites until the week before the event but sometimes they can also take longer and not appear until the teams have been announced around 48 hours before.
