Rugby League 1895 Cup
No matter if you know it as the RFL 1895 Cup, the Rugby League 1895 Cup or simply as the 1895 Cup, it is a tournament that features the teams of the Championship and League 1 an opportunity to not only pick up some silverware but to also play in front of a huge crowd on the hallowed turf of the iconic Wembley Stadium.
Over the years there have been a number of lower level cup competitions to give opportunities for teams outside of the Super League to enjoy picking up some silverware and for team to be able to compete against each other.
The forerunner of the 1895, which was inaugurated in 2019, was the Championship Cup, which was formed in 2002 and ran until 2013, with varying levels of success.
Unfortunately, it is not always a competition that teams take seriously.
There are some legitimate issues for clubs and some that are not quite so legitimate but with the top teams in the Championship and League 1 wanting to rest players as they concentrate on promotion and those struggling towards the foot of the Championship also wanting to focus on the league it can leave the 1895 somewhat on the backburner.
Other teams, especially those in League 1 have a number of player who simply cannot commit to the extra matches due to work commitments and that too has a big impact on the cup.
Thankfully, when it gets to the later stage and especially from the semi-finals onwards, the cup is taken incredibly seriously by all of the teams as a place at Wembley is on the line and then in the final, teams not only want to do their best to make the most of playing at Wembley and in front of a large crowd but they of course want to go all out for the win to pick up some silverware, with the 1895 Cup itself on the line.
From a betting point of view, the tournament is a great chance to pick a team to provide an upset and to get some great value but unfortunately it is a tournament that often goes overlooked by bookmakers, event he absolute best bookies for betting on Rugby League.
Much of that can be put down to the lack of focus on the competition from all stakeholders including fans, players, clubs and even the RFL but hopefully in the future the competition will get the recognition that it deserves and that should hopefully lead to much more focus from medial partners and from bookies.
The RFL 1895 Cup was inaugurated in 2019 where the Sheffield Eagles took on the Widnes Vikings at Wembley Stadium in a game that the South Yorkshire side ran out 36-18 victors to turn back the clock and remind us all of the that famous Challenge Cup victor under the twin towers against Wigan.
That first final was played on the same day as the Challenge Cup Final and although it was initially hoped that the match would take place as the warm-up match for the Challenge Cup final itself where it would have been played in front of an ever increasing crowd and one that was full of excitement and ready to support the 2 teams, in the end the match took place afterwards.
That of course meant that many fans from the losing side had already left the ground or where in no shape to be exited for the match whilst many of the fans of the winning side did stick around longer but obviously they were more focussed on the success of their team victory and on celebrating that fact.
Both Sheffield and Widnes did have decent backing of their own fans however and the game was a good one that showed the promise of the tournament and that it could easily go on to be a successful tournament given the right opportunity to flourish and hopefully going forward it will do just that.
Not only can the competition be a great boost for lower level teams as they have a chance to reach Wembley and that will give many of the players a career defining moments, but hopefully it will act a way for lower level clubs to boost their coffers- something that is always such a tough balancing acts for all clubs.
If you are fortunate enough to find a bookie offering odds and markets on the 1895 Cup, it will likely only be the more basic markets that are available.
Some will offer pre-tournament markets such as outrights on who will win the tournament or who will reach the final and some may offer match markets for the final as the fact it is played at Wembley Stadium and on such a big day as the Challenge Cup final day does put more eyeballs on the game.
To Win Outright– This is where you simply pick a club that you believe will win the tournament. This is normally a market offered pre-tournament and during the early rounds.
To Reach Final– This is another market that is open early on in the event and before the first round as it is where you pick a club to reach the final.
To Win Final– This is, as you would expect, where you bet on the team you think will win the 1895 Cup Final, with 2-way and 3-way (where a draw is taken into account) markets offered.
