St Helens v Wigan Warriors

St Helens welcome their arch-rivals, the Wigan Warriors to the Totally Wicked Stadium for this round 22 match up from the Rugby Super League and for the first time in over 2 decades, this derby isn’t been shown live on tv.

There are a few reasons for that, with the focus been on the relegation scrap been the main one but it also highlights just where Wigan are at the moment. The Warriors have turned around there season, from been deep in a relegation scrap to battling it out over the last couple of play-off places.

That is a long way from their usual battles at the top of the table and when you add in the dominance of Saints in the league this year and it comes as no surprise why the game wasn’t picked up.

Thankfully for those in attendance, the Warriors have started to show some strong form recently and that sets this game up to be a fascinating one.

Saints have won 5 of their last 6 matches, including each of their last 4 and still remain undefeated at home.

Wigan have won each of their last 5 matches.

Team News

After playing the last month without a specialist hooker, Saints welcome back both Aaron Smith and James Roby. Joseph Paulo and Matty Costello make way.

Wigan make 1 change with Joseph Paulo and Matty Costello dropping out to be replaced by Jake Shorrocks.

These derby matches always find a way of making form go out of the window with the winner been the team that can handle the occasion but there has been few occasion when one side has been so much more dominant over the other for such a long part of the season so whilst we expect the big game players of Wigan to step up and to make things difficult for the home side.

The first half will likely be close throughout but then in the second half, we expect the extra quality and belief of the home side to shine through although this is a game that could easily go either way, especially if Wigan can start strongly and give themselves something to build on.
