Salford Red Devils vs Wigan Warriors
The Salford Red Devils welcome their near neighbours, the Wigan Warriors in match that will have a huge say on both teams season.
Salford have started to impress this season and the team expected to be battling out at the foot of the table have built up a small gap over the likes of Wigan but they know that if they can win this one, it will be perhaps time for Red Devil’s fans to start looking towards the paly-off battle rather than the relegation battle.
Salford start the round in 4th place where they are 6 places and 6 points ahead of Wigan who surprisingly start the round joint bottom of Super League. If Wigan can pick up a moral and confidence boosting win in this one, it could be the catalyst to move back towards the play-off battle whilst a loss could see them cemented in the relegation scrap.
Despite some strong performances recently, Salford have won just 2 of their last 5 outings whilst Wigan have lost each of their last 5.
Salford name a settled squad for this one so Adam Lawton should see a home debut after playing against Cas last week.
For the struggling Warriors there is some relief this week as they name winger Joe Burgess for the first time in almost a year. Fellow winger Dom Manfredi returns form injury as well as does Ben Flower but their is an injury to Morgan Escare.
On paper this is a game that the Warriors should win but so far this season Wigan have looked a shadow of themselves and a shadow on the quality they have whilst Salford have really stepped things up and look much better than they do on paper.
At some point, you have to expect things to click for Wigan and the return of some key players could provide the spark to do that but going on their recent form, it is difficult to see that happening and even with 2 international quality wingers, if they make the wrong plays and drop the ball like they have for much of the season, they won’t see enough action to influence things.
Wigan’s defence has been poor at best and non-existent at worst in matches this season and with the Red Devils new penchant for attacking flair, we are going to back them to simply outscore the Warriors.
