RFL League 1
The division was first inaugurated back in 2003 when the then Northern Ford Premiership was divided into 2 separate entities, National League One and National League Two.

Rugby League’s third tier has had a number of ups and downs over the years and has bene through a number of name and set up changes.
Starting life in 1991 as the Rugby League Championship Third Division, the competition remained relatively sporadic until 2003 when the current version of the league was developed under the Northern Ford Premiership banner.
Since then the competition has been apace for established teams to try and progress up the rugby league pyramid and into the championship and for new clubs to find their footing.
Amongst teams to join the professional rugby league ranks via League 1 are the York City Knights, the South Wales Scorpions, the North Wales Crusaders, the Hemel Stags, the Gloucestershire All Gold, Oxford Rugby league, the Toronto Wolfpack, Toulouse Olympique the Coventry Bears and in 2021 the Ottawa Aces.
Whilst some teams have struggled at the top level and have dropped back down to the amateur game, some have gone on to become huge success with Toronto leading the way as a club to form, start life in League 1 and then go onto reach the Super League.
Despite names from across England, Wales, France, and Canada all having plied there trade in the competition, it is a league that is often sadly over-looked by bookmakers.
