League 1

League 1
Rugby League’s League 1 is a fascinating league with semi pro teams from all over the UK playing games that are full of try and excitement and can often be unpredictable. The league is a mixture of teams who have made the step up from amateur Rugby League into the pro-ranks and those long-established teams who have struggled recently and find themselves in the 3rd tear.

The league is also full of older players, who have careers at the very top of the sport but who are now coming to the end of their playing career, coming up against youngsters who are just starting out on their Rugby League careers.

With the same happening at the coaching level, with young coaches getting their first chances in the top job coming up against head coaches with years of experience, the League 1 is microcosm of the sport of Rugby League.

That mixture makes for fascinating match ups with teams from all across the UK taking on some of the historic clubs from sports heartlands.

Unfortunately from our point of view here at RLBet.co.uk, League 1 fails to get the attention it deserves from the media and fans alike and that also equates into the betting opportunities afforded by even the best online bookmakers.

RFL League 1

The division was first inaugurated back in 2003 when the then Northern Ford Premiership was divided into 2 separate entities, National League One and National League Two.

Now known as the Rugby League Championship and the RFL League 1, the league remains the 3rd tier of Rugby League football but since starting life as a league for struggling heartland clubs and for expansion clubs making a start to professional life, the league has now developed itself in a multi-national league that has seen some he stars play in it.

The league was the first competition to host a professional rugby team from Canada, as the Toronto Wolfpack started life in League 1.

This brought lots of attention to the competition and highlighted the quality on show to a whole new audience not just in the United Kingdom and in Canada but across the world.

Unfortunately from our point of view as a betting portal, that has failed to equate into extra focus on the competition from bookmakers, with only a small number of bookies offering only a small number of markets- if at all.

Nowadays the league is open to teams from England, Wales, France, and Canada with more and more countries trying to enter teams in what is one of the most vibrant sporting competitions in the world.

If the Super League is all about elite level athletes and the Championship is about the push to join the big boys and the top table, League 1 is all about passion.

With little, if any, money to be made in the competition, the players and coaches are really in it for the love of the sport.

From players winding down their careers but still loving been out on the field so much that they are not yet ready to give it up to youngsters starting their career and loving players against former full time pros and then of course there are those players who have made a career for themselves at this level and know all about the dedication it takes.

That is what makes the competition such an entertaining one as whilst it may not have the quality of the top 2 divisions, you know that each and every player, coach and manager will give you 100% week in week out.

In any ways that makes it a league for purists despite it been a league made up of lots of expansion teams a mix that sadly does not always gel well.

Rugby League’s third tier has had a number of ups and downs over the years and has bene through a number of name and set up changes.

Starting life in 1991 as the Rugby League Championship Third Division, the competition remained relatively sporadic until 2003 when the current version of the league was developed under the Northern Ford Premiership banner.

Since then the competition has been apace for established teams to try and progress up the rugby league pyramid and into the championship and for new clubs to find their footing.

Amongst teams to join the professional rugby league ranks via League 1 are the York City Knights, the South Wales Scorpions, the North Wales Crusaders, the Hemel Stags, the Gloucestershire All Gold, Oxford Rugby league, the Toronto Wolfpack, Toulouse Olympique the Coventry Bears and in 2021 the Ottawa Aces.

Whilst some teams have struggled at the top level and have dropped back down to the amateur game, some have gone on to become huge success with Toronto leading the way as a club to form, start life in League 1 and then go onto reach the Super League.

Despite names from across England, Wales, France, and Canada all having plied there trade in the competition, it is a league that is often sadly over-looked by bookmakers.

Whilst some may offer odds at the start of the season for markets such as who will win the title / be promoted and maybe who will be the wooden spoon, it can be exceedingly difficult to get odds on match related markets.

That is, and continues to be, highly frustrating for all fans of Rugby League as is the lack of respect shown to the competition from media partners including SkySports and BCC Sports.

The competition as a healthy fanbase from across the United Kingdom and internationally but aside from trade publication and website, it can be difficult to find out any information on the league.

That makes it difficult for us to also focus on the competition as our previews and predictions rely on having up to date information and of course as a Rugby League Betting Portal, our focus is on betting on Rugby League and if the bookies refuse to offer markets and odds for League 1, we cannot bring you betting related content.
