Challenge Cup 5th Round 2020 Preview & Prediction

The Challenge Cup 5th round see’s teams from League 1, the Championship and the Super League all do battle to get 1 step closer to Wembley in what is always one of the highlights of the season.

Whilst upsets are far to few nowadays, every club goes into the round hoping to book that trend.

Challenge Cup Round 5 2020

Date: Wednesday 11th March 2020
Whitehaven RLFC
Whitehaven RLFC v Dewsbury Rams
Kick Off: 19:00
Venue: The Recreation Ground (Whitehaven)
Dewsbury Rams

These 2 Championship sides will be dreaming of a big Super league club in the next round but for that dream to come true, they must get past this tricky mid-week game.

Whilst it has been the Rams who have started their league campaign the best, we are going to back Whitehaven for the win as not only is the trip up to north Cumbria a tough one, especially for semi-pro teams but to do that in mid-week and in winter, the hosts will have a huge advantage and that will likely prove the difference.

Prediction: Whitehaven RLFC by 10

Toronto Wolfpack
Toronto Wolfpack v Huddersfield Giants
Kick Off: 19:45
Venue: John Smith’s Stadium (Huddersfield)
Huddersfield Giants
The Huddersfield Giants have made a great start to the season and are looking like a team that can compete for honours whilst Toronto have found the step up to Super League tough.

Whilst having to play the game away from home in Huddersfield, the nominal home side will be hoping a change of scenery and a change of competition can give a change of performance but with the struggling so badly in defence we can only see a win for the inform Giants.

Prediction: Huddersfield Giants by 16

Date: Friday 13th March 2020
Featherstone Rovers
Featherstone Rovers v Hunslet Hawks
Kick Off: 19:45
Venue: Post Office Road (Featherstone, Wakefield)
Hunslet Hawks

Featherstone are one of the top clubs in the Championships and the trip to Post Office Road is always a tough one but for the Hunslet Hawks, of League 1, it will likely be to tough as we expect the hosts to win.

Whilst a semi-pro team, the Rovers have a number of players who have played most of their careers in a full time environment so they will have the extra fitness. When you couple that with more quality across the park and you have what should be a comfortable home victory.

Prediction: Featherstone Rovers by 16

Wakefield Trinity
Wakefield Trinity v Bradford Bulls
Kick Off: 19:45
Venue: Belle Vue Stadium (Wakefield)
Bradford Bulls
Wakefield Trinity welcome back John Kear but as the now head coach of the Bradford Bulls, the hosts will be hoping it is an unhappy return.

These 2 met in a epic Million Pound game a few years back and it was the hosts who went on to stay in the Super League and you have to say that they have flourished whilst the Bulls have somewhat floundered and now find themselves having a nomadic future.

Unfortunately you also have to say that they don’t look to have too much of a future n this years Challenge Cup as they head to Belle Vue but the Bulls showed last year that they have what it takes to take on full time Super League teams and progress but that was a t home and this is a different Bulls outfit.

Prediction: Wakefield Trinity by 16

Date: Sunday 15th March 2020
Sheffield Eagles
Sheffield Eagles v Working Town
Kick Off: 14:00
Venue: Keepmoat Stadium (Doncaster)
Workington Town
The Sheffield Eagles of the Championship take on Workington Town of League 1 in Doncaster in a game that will be a tricky one for the hosts.

The trip from Cumbria to South Yorkshire is always a tricky one for the part time Workington club but to do that and face a semi-pro Championship side, it is just that bit tougher.

Sheffield have much more quality in their ranks and they should have the better fitness and despite there poor start to the season, we are going to back Sheffield for the win.

Prediction: Sheffield Eagles by 12

Widnes Vikings
Widnes Vikings v Swinton Lions
Kick Off: 15:00
Venue: Halton Stadium (Widnes)
Swinton Lions
The Widnes Vikings take on the Swinton Lions in an all Championship match up from the Challenge Cup and with both teams dreaming of a Super League match up in the next round, we expect them both to give their all and for this to be potentially one of the ties of the round.

The trip to Widnes and their 3g pitch is always tough for teams and with home advantage been so key to the Vikings, we are going to back them for the win.

Prediction: Widnes Vikings by 10

Hull Kingston Rovers
Hull KR v Leigh Centurions
Kick Off: 15:00
Venue: New Craven Park (Hull)
Leigh Centurions
Hull KR welcome the leigh Centurions for what could easily be the match of the round is East Yorkshire.

The Super League hull Kingston Rovers will be the favourites but they know the quality of the Championships Leigh Centurions, especially as they have so many ex-Super League players in their ranks.

Leigh have made a great start to the new season and they come into this one full of confidence whilst the Robins have found the going tough so whilst there could easily be an upset in this one, it is always difficult to back against a Super League team against a Championship side when the top flight team are at home.

Prediction: Hull KR by 8

York City Knights
York City Knights v Rochdale Hornets
Kick Off: 15:00
Venue: Bootham Crescent Stadium (York)
Rochdale Hornets
This is a tricky match to predict as Rochdale have had little rugby so far this season whilst York have found the going tough in 2020 so far.

On appear, York have far more quality and with them been a Championship side up against a League 1 side at home, it is tough to back against the hosts for the win that could kick start their season.

Prediction: York City Knights by 10
