In 1999, the final was held at the then Accor Stadium when it was at its biggest capacity just before the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

That allowed 107,999 fans to pack into the stadium to watch the Melbourne Storm defeat local favourites St George Illawarra Dragons in a great game by 20 points to 18.

The next year saw the Brisbane Broncos become the first club to in the Grand Final on more than one occasion as thy defeat the Sydney Roosters whilst the 2020 final saw the first non-Australian side reach the NRL Grand Final as the new Zealand Warriors lost to the Sydney Roosters.

The 2007 and 2009 finals were won by the Melbourne Storm but those 2 were annulled from the record books due to a massive and all engulfing salary cap scandal involving the Victorian club.

In 2014, Sam Burgess became the first Englishman to win the Clive Churchill Medal for a man of the match in the final when his South Sydney Rabbitohs side defeated the Canterbury Bulldogs in all Sydney final.

In 2015, the Queensland rival of the North Queensland Cowboys and the Brisbane Broncos played in one of the most iconic finals in a game that the Cowboys one there first ever NRL title by a single point thanks to a drop goal from the iconic Johnathan Thurston.

In 2019, the Sydney Roosters became the first club to defend there title in a win against the Canberra Raiders after defeating the Melbourne Storm in 2018 but interestingly it was Canberra’s Jack Wighton who won the man of the match award in the 2019 final to become the first ever winner on a losing side.

Pre-NRL Grand Finals

Rugby league is Australia does, of course, have a much longer history than the NRL and there have been a number of famous and infamous moments that have occurred in Grand Finals almost from day one.

In 1909, South Sydney defeated Balmain via forfeit after both teams agree to not turn up but Souths did and after kicking off against no one and scoring a try, they were declared the winners!

Balmain and Souths once again made headline sin 1924 when it was Balmain who won the final but with a 3-0 score line, it was and still is, the lowest scoring final ever.

St George defeated Balmain in 1956 to start a great winning run that concluded in 1966 to rap up an incredible and record breaking 11 straight wins.

In 1977, St George and Parramatta play out the first ever draw after the game finished 9-9 after extra time. A replay was played a week later in which St George won 22-0.

Incredibly, the next Grand Final was also a draw with Manly and Canberra ending locked at 11 all after 80 minutes and with no extra time the game when straight to a replay in which Manly won 16-0.

In 1989, Canberra came from 14-2 down to defeat Balmain 19-14 in extra time and in doing so they became the first ever winner form outside of New South Wales.

Just 3 years later, the Brisbane Broncos won the 1992 Grand Final to become the first ever winner from Queensland.
